WHAT IS IT?
Remedial Massage is the systematic assessment and treatment of the muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues of the body to assist in rehabilitation, pain and injury management. It is performed to create favorable conditions in which the body can return back to normal health after strain or injury. Remedial Massage Therapy is defined by the premise that the treatment can, within reason, reverse certain physical ailments a patient is experiencing. If an injury has occurred where the result is a moderate amount of structural pain and/or loss of function, then the therapy is required to reduce or eliminate the pain and restore mobility and functionality.
The way that Remedial Massage works is to balance the length, tension, and tone of the muscle/soft tissue; in turn this promotes the return to a normal and functional joint, capsular and/or bone positioning. This then increases the flow of blood and lymph, especially in injured areas, to help the body remove blockages, damaged cells, scar tissue and adhesions resulting from injury. To do this successfully and correctly the Remedial Massage Therapist (RMT) must have an advanced understanding of human anatomy, physiology and pathophysioloy to be able to pin point where their patient needs to be treated. They must also base their service on best
Their services must revolve around best practice principles and before any Remedial Treatment begins and thorough consultation and assessment must me performed to properly acertain the patients current status of health. If the patient is deemed suitable for Remedial Massage Therapy then the RMT will rely on the feedback of the patient to identify further areas that require attention and can consistently apply the correct treatment throughout the course of therapy.
